PHILLY McMAHON: THE HARDEST HIT. Broadcast on RTE 2 October 2018.

29-year-old Philly McMahon is an All-Star Dublin footballer and 3-times All-Ireland winner from Ballymun. Five years ago, John, the big brother he idolised, died after a long battle with heroin and methadone addiction.

How do two brothers end up taking such different paths in life?

Structured around a deeply personal and devastatingly honest interview, this documentary is a personal exploration of addiction, mental health, loss and the power of self-belief from a sporting hero and role model from Ballymun.

SCHIZOPHRENIA, THE VOICES IN MY HEAD, aired last September 2017 and was nominated for Best Single Documentary award in the 2018 Celtic Media Festival.

Also nominated as best documentary of the year 2017 by The irish Times:

This documentary tells the stories of six young people living with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, all determined to get on with life and fight against the huge stigma associated with it. I knew very little about the condition when we started out, it’s a complex subject matter and one that myself and producer Aoife Kavanagh have been living and breathing for the past six months. I feel we’ve done the contributors justice and hope this doc will open people’s eyes to the fact that there are different types of schizophrenia, not everyone with a diagnosis will experience the same symptoms, challenges or successes as our contributors but hopefully their experiences will help shed some light on a condition that still carries huge stigma. We’ve come a long way in how we deal with and speak about mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, schizophrenia sometimes feels like the last frontier and these six have shown extraordinary bravery in agreeing to take part. Thanks to you all.

It was shown at the Fastnet Film Fest in 2017 and though unpolished I think it captures Yonela in all her positivity & creativity!
